How to Build a Deck Safely

During the construction of a deck it is never possible to overerstate the importance of using the safest possible construction methods. The suggestions that follow are work procedures and tool safety reminders that apply not only to deck building but also home projects in general.

Of course none of them are substitutes for your own common sense.

1. Always use care, caution and good judgment when working at any phase of building a deck, especially above ground level. Ladders and scaffolding systems are readily available at home improvement retail outlets and building equipment rental businesses.

2. Always ensure that the electrical setup is safe. Make sure that no circuit is overloaded. See that all power tools and outlets are properly grounded and avoid the use of power tools in wet locations. Make a point of using an electrical power bar, especially when using extension cords. Use outdoor type extension cords that are specifically sized to handle the types of power tools to be used in the construction of a deck.

3. Always read the instructions for using a new power tool that you have no previous experience with, especially rental ones. Heed the warnings listed. Ask for a demonstration at the rental facility to ensure that it is working and that you are aware of the method for its proper use. Wear any safety gear such as gloves or eyewear that is required.

4. Always pay deliberate attention to how a tool functions to avoid any chance of injury. Know the limitations of the tool and avoid trying to force it to do something that it was not designed to do.

5. Always ensure that any adjustment mechanism on a power tool is locked before the start of work. This is especially important when working with portable circular saws, and table saws. Make sure that blades are properly fixed in place and tightened with such tools as jigsaws and reciprocating saws.

6. Always wear eye protection when using power tools or striking concrete or metal on metal as a chip or piece can fly off injuring an eye.

7. Always keep fingers or hands away from the business ends of saw blades, cutters and drill bits. Ensure that the blade guards especially are functioning properly on circular saws and table saws.

8. Always use the auxiliary handle with a drill in order to control the torque when larger drill bits are used. This is very important when using a hammer drill to bore into concrete.

9. Always change a saw blade, drill bit or router bit when the power tool is unplugged to avoid an accident that could be prevented by the use of good judgment.

10.Always cut tiny pieces of wood or metal off larger pieces that are securely clamped or fastened to a work surface that is stable.

11.Always wear a disposable face mask when creating dust by sawing or sanding to avoid inhaling small particles that could become a health issue.

12.Always hold a circular saw firmly with one hand on the trigger handle and the other hand on the secondary support handle. Avoid placing a hand in the path of any saw blade.

13.Always work in lighting that is sufficient to allow you to perform the task properly. Move the materials and tools if necessary to another area so that it is possible to work safely.

14.Carry sharp or pointed tools such as awls, chisel and box cutters in a tool belt with leather pockets and holders rather than in your pockets.

15.Always check with local building codes when planning your project and follow them to the letter when working since they are intended to protect your safety.

Taking the time to exercise good judgment and use safe work procedures will ensure that you spend your time on your newly finished deck rather than in the emergency ward of your local hospital.

Its summer time. The grass is turning green the birds are back. Its time to complete those projects at the Lake Cottage or camp or perhaps even in your own backyard back home in the city. It never hurts to prepare for your project and its safe completion. An ounce of prevention in terms of project safety can be worth more than a ton of cure. Remember the whole point of the exercise is relaxation and enjoyment. At the end of the day, or at the end of the project you will be able to sit down and enjoy the company of friends or family.

First of all when it comes to any of your projects take time ahead of starting to survey the project area. If there are hazards in the area not these. If there are electoral power lines in the ground call the authorities to locate these. They will only be too glad to help you. After all it’s in their interest to make sure of no disruptions of power and have no neighborhood accidents. It’s best to call during business hours. If there are overhead lines, note these as well. Back to electrical tools, Inspect any cords and plug for integrity and condition. Make sure there are no breaks or open contacts. If possible grounded plug is always a better choice than non-grounded ones. Grounded plugs now not only come in the traditional three prong plug, but also in the newer style grounded two prong plugs. You can properly identify grounded two prong plugs as one prong of the electrical plug in will be wider than the other one. The same procedure and rules can be applied to extension cords. Ensure ahead of time that you have an extension cord or cords of appropriate and adequate length. Having the proper tools and equipment on hand can save your day and your project.

If your electrical tools are battery powered – it’s usually a rechargeable battery, and then if possible inspects the battery for its condition and any damage. Inspect the cords and plugs as well. Especially if the tools have been stored over the long, cold winter in an unheated storage shed this can be a concern. Plastic can crack in the cold. In addition if the batteries do not hold a charge, due to their condition, then you will be rewarded with longer charges and greater convenience.

Lastly if you are going to paint or string electrical fixtures in an outdoor area, or even changing electrical light bulbs, then it never hurts to play on the safe side and turn off the power. This can be done via a switch if possible, or if need be at the electrical panel itself.

Why Scissor Lift Training Is Essential

The Work at Height Regulations (2005) have worked hard to increase the safety of all workers who work on scaffolds or powered access machinery. Parts of the regulations ensure persons working on items such as the scissor lift have had suitable training. By making sure all those using machinery have had adequate training, safe working procedures are followed meaning that all work in a safer environment. The scissor lift also falls into the mobile elevated work platform category or MEWP.

MEWPs make working at height easier for a variety of different industries allowing them to reach work areas quickly and easily. The modern scissor lift also has guard rails which are put in place to ensure workers do not fall and injure themselves. Additionally they can be used inside and out. Uses for the scissor lift vary greatly, from painting and decorating large rooms where ladders are not safe, changing electrical fittings in halls and amphitheatres and repairing brick work at height. Thankfully the Work at Height Regulations ensures that no matter what the uses, workers carry out their tasks in a safe and responsible manner.

Part of adequate training allows operators to choose the right scissor lift for the job, this not only concerns the height at which the lift can reach, but also the size of the platform and the safety equipment on the lift. IPAF, a body set up to create regulations and safe working methods for powered access machinery, is currently involved with a ‘clunk click’ campaign. The work of IPAF campaigners is to ensure that those working at height have suitable harnessing equipment and are secured to the scissor lift at all times. This campaign is working in conjunction with the government’s health and safety executive so safe working practices are adopted in all industries using MEWPs.

When choosing a scissor lift there are various considerations that must be made. The first of these considerations is the height of the job; understandably the lift must reach to a height that allows workers to carry out the job safely without stretching too much. Additionally adequate training will give workers the knowledge to look at the conditions and deem whether work will be safe. These conditions include the surface the platform will be placed upon and if working externally, any weather conditions that could be deemed as unsafe. As well as concerns with conditions, training ensures operatives will be able to recognise any other hazards such as overhanging features that may impede the operation of the scissor lift, or if working by a road, which traffic measures will need to be taken to ensure collisions do not happen.

Legally defined training is essential for at least one of the persons operating a scissor lift. Part of this training will include how to cope in the event of an accident. Tasks such as looking after injured workers when they have had a fall are essential. Falls can seriously injure and hence having the first aid knowledge of what to do means that the safety of workers is enhanced. In addition to medical training, courses normally include information on how to check over machinery to see if it is safe as well giving the knowledge of how to make more detailed assessments of the operability of a scissor lift.

Thankfully the work of IPAF and the government has made scissor lift operators safer. Working at height is always a risk no matter how many safety principles are instilled in operatives. By having the knowledge to reduce these risks and cope in emergencies the working at height environment has been made safer.
